THE SERENGETI, THROUGH THE SEASONS

Follow the herds.
Find your moment.

The Great Migration moves all year. Use this seasonal guide to choose when—and where—to experience it in Tanzania.

  1. JAN — MAR

    New life on the plains

    Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Calving draws the herds to the southern grasslands. February is typically the peak, with young wildebeest and predators sharing the plains.

  2. APR — MAY

    The journey north

    Central Serengeti

Herds begin moving north through the central plains toward the Western Corridor, following fresh grazing.

  3. JUN

    Along the Grumeti

    Western Corridor

The migration gathers in the west. Grumeti crossings may occur as the herds continue north.

  4. JUL — OCT

    River-crossing season

    Northern Serengeti & Mara River

A typical window for Mara River crossings. Herds move between Tanzania and Kenya; their position varies throughout the season.

  5. NOV — DEC

    Returning to the south

    Central to southern Serengeti

With the short rains, herds travel south toward Ndutu and the next calving cycle.

Nature sets the pace. These are typical seasonal patterns, not live herd locations. Rainfall can shift the timing; sightings and river crossings are never guaranteed.

How do I organize a safari with Asili Pathways?

Tell us your travel dates, trip length, number of travelers, interests and approximate budget. We will shape an itinerary and proposal, then refine it with you. The website planner lets you save your ideas; downloading a plan does not send an enquiry or confirm a booking.

What deposit is required, and when is the balance due?

A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking. The remaining 70% must be paid 30 days before arrival. For bookings made less than 30 days before arrival, full payment is required when booking.

What accommodation styles are available?

Choose from Basic, Comfort, Comfort Plus and Luxury options, depending on your route and budget. Basic camping uses public campsites with shared bathrooms. Lodge and tented-camp options generally offer private bathrooms; exact facilities vary by property.

What should I pack?

Bring your passport, flight details, itinerary, insurance information, any required vaccination certificate, payment cards and suitable cash. Useful essentials include sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, toiletries, hand sanitizer, tissues, a small towel, a flashlight, camera equipment and spare batteries or memory cards. Keep essential medication, valuables and a change of clothes in your carry-on, within airline restrictions. Use reusable packing pouches and check current baggage rules.
